Mumbai Port Trust is a port which lies midway on the West coast of India, on the natural deep-water harbour of Mumbai in Maharashtra. The harbour spread over 400 square kilometres is protected by the mainland of Konkan to its east and north and by the island city of Mumbai to its west.

General Details



Vessel Restriction Note :


#Notification to VTS:
All vessels leaving Mumbai Harbour must notify the VTS at least 60 minutes before being ready to depart.

#Naval Ship Notification:
Naval ships departing from the Naval Tidal Basin must also notify Mumbai VTS 60 minutes in advance via telephone or hotline.

#Safe Speed:
Vessels approaching congested areas must exercise extreme caution and follow safe speeds as per the Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS).

#Overtaking:
Overtaking in the main channel is generally not permitted unless agreed upon by the pilots when embarked or by the Masters of both vessels and VTS.

#VHF Channel 12:
Vessels must maintain a continuous listening watch on VHF Channel 12 throughout their passage within Mumbai Port limits.

#Smaller Vessels:
Smaller vessels are not to impede the passage of large or deep draft vessels and should seek advice or directions from VTS if needed.

#Pilotage:
When a vessel is in pilotage charge, no ladders, accommodation or pilot ladders should be lowered without the consent of the Pilot.

#Berth Restrictions:
All vessels within the port must take up assigned berths by the Deputy Conservator and may be required to change berths as directed.

#Yacht Anchorage:
A specific area is reserved in the port as an anchorage for yachts, and no other vessels except yachts and small passenger boats are permitted within those limits.



Navigation Details :


(a) Light Buoys: Three light buoys south-east of Prongs Lighthouse, each with a different flashing light pattern.

(b) Other Subsidiary Lights: Dolphin Rock Light and Tucker Beacon Light.

(c) Lighted Buoys and Beacons: Four lighted floating buoys mark the approach channel, two jetty end beacons at mooring dolphins, and two leading lights for night navigation.

(d) Elephanta Patch Beacon: Upgraded for improved range.
